Web Casting of Sessions at DECUS '98/Los Angeles

The following two sessions are being web cast from Los Angeles.

If you can't be with us in person, join us beginning on Tuesday, October 6 at 2:00 PM, Pacific Time, at http://www.tscentral.com/webcasts/DECUS_0998/ to view the sessions. The presentations will be available for viewing anytime over the next six months.

Tuesday, October 6, 1998, viewing begins at 2:00 PM, Pacific Time Keynote Address John T. Rose, Senior Vice President & Group General Manager, Enterprise Computing Group "Compaq's product strategy for meeting the enterprise computing needs of current DIGITAL customers"

Wednesday, October 7, 1998, viewing begins at 1:00 PM, Pacific Time (EN122) Production Computing Using Windows NT Speaker: William Beckett, GrayMatter Software Corporation

After viewing this session participants are able to:

  • Better understand the design differences between workstation operating systems and conventional time sharing systems.
  • Better understand some of the available options and techniques for supporting the migration of production processes to Windows NT.
  • Plan the integration of machines running Windows NT into the production processing environment

The micro-computer revolution has resulted in a dramatic decentralization of computing facilities and an associated shift in the kind of work done by computers. Within the last few years, however, a number of these so called PCs have emerged which have sufficient hardware capacity to allow them to take on many of the classical "batch processing" jobs that in many cases are still being done by older mainframe and mini-computers.

Unfortunately, porting these production oriented operations to the new machines can be difficult. One significant problem is that the operating systems developed for the desktop machines, such as Windows and Windows NT, do not have the system level support for "production computing" found in the older time sharing systems such as DIGITAL's VMS or UNIX.

This session discusses specific techniques, tools, and software procurement and development strategies for getting a PC with over twice or three times the power of a typical mini-computer to perform at least as well on a legacy set of production processing problems. Particular attention is given to the problem of supporting high volume production printing.
